Custom Shadowline

Custom Shadowline

Create a versatile shadowline. Architects and homeowners have been increasingly choosing interior designs characterised by clean, contemporary lines. The popular standard 10mm SL10 metal shadowline profile is used to provide that unique line around a perimeter of a ceiling, doorway or floor skirting. However the standard 10mm shadowline leaves little margin for error and the 10mm margin is often not enough.

Custom shadowline from Studco provides and alternative to address these concerns.

  • Create the exact shadowline you need
  • Allow for variations in floor height or plaster thickness using a custom formed section
  • Creativity and solutions to overcome issues using standard SL10 profile
  • Heavy duty 0.8 zincanneal material to create a perfect straight and clean line

Modern architecture often calls for shadow lines to be fitted into the design of the building at the construction stage. The term shadow line is used to describe a gap or space between two surfaces, for example between the bottom of a drywall and the beginning of the skirting board. The gap is outlined in shadow, and if correctly executed can look very attractive. The installation of the shadow gap also allows for errors in the construction of additional features to pre-existing surfaces, and can also help the structure to breathe, in particular to expand and contract. Construction is made much easier by the use of these gaps, but it also requires a lot of precision and accurate cutting, which could make these shadow lines very time-consuming, unless you have tools to help you fit it.

Choosing a custom shadow line

The modern requirement for clean lines and flush finishes means that creating a shadow line has to be very precise, as the slightest deviation from the true will be immediately visible. These shadow lines therefore need to be as preset as possible, in order to reduce the margin of error and to ensure that the construction is as fast as possible. In most cases, a standard of around 10mm for a shadow line is the most useful, but it does require precision, and may also not be enough for the design of the room. In these cases, it may be necessary to use a customised shadow line which can be fitted to the plasterboard in order to create the space required.

Using aluminium shadow lines

One of the best ways to create a shadow line with the minimum of fuss is to use a moulded line which can form the gap that you need. The shadow line will be placed onto the bottom of the drywall, and attached using minimal screws. The bottom of the shadow line then forms the start of the skirting board, allowing you to precisely place these boards, and ensure that you get the best out of the structure. In some cases, it is not always possible to get the full 10mm into the location, and it may even restrict you in the construction of your build. What this means is that you need to purchase custom-made shadow lines which can accommodate the demands of difficult drywall profiles and awkward locations. It is particularly useful in making a straight line in areas where previous construction projects have left uneven edges or uneven walls.
